I don't want to ever wear makeup but here's the thing: I hate not having mascara on because my eyes are invisible. SO, I gave eyelash extensions a try. Because, why not!?
I put out some feelers on instagram to see where other people go. I also did some pricing checks because even though I wasn't looking to only spend $50 on a full set, $200 felt like a lot to me. The average price for a full set, from my research, was about $150. Once I got some recommendations, I posted about who I heard about on instagram to share the wealth of information I got from others. From there, Alyssa hit up my DMs me and offered to answer any questions I had. And you KNOW I definitely had questions! After talking with her, I was ready to book.
Once I was at my appointment, she explained everything she was doing during each step. Here are some basic questions I asked (and get asked all the time).
How much is the first appointment?
Her full sets are $125 right now.
How long is the first appointment?
My appointment took almost 2 hours. Alyssa gave me permission to fall asleep right away and it may feel like that's impossible to do ... but you're on a cozy table. Go ahead and fall asleep if you want because it'll take a while.
What does daily maintenance look like?
- Brush them out in the morning. I always have a brush on me so I can fluff them if they’re getting wiley during the day.
- No oil-based face products. Oils break down the adhesive, so when it comes to makeup, cleansers or anything that goes near the eyes, it has to be oil free.
- Don't pick at your lashes or rub your eyes. The more you mess with your lashes, the more likely they are to come out.
- Try not to sleep with your face in the pillow. I sleep with a blanket in a U shape around my head. That way my eyes are never smashed into my pillow. This is by no means a requirement but I'm all about doing what I can to protect my investment and keep these lashes lookin' good.
What’s the average length of time they last before needing a fill?
Fills to maintain are $60. How often you need to get them really depends on your natural lash shedding cycle and how well you take care of them. Alyssa recommends every 2–3 weeks to keep them nice and full looking. I get mine done every 3 weeks.
Natural or synthetic?
Alyssa actually recommends going with a synthetic because they won’t lose their shape. With natural fibers, they can lose their curl over time.
I've now had extensions since February and I still think they're a major game changer. I rarely wear makeup and I'm never self-conscious about it. I post lots of pictures on instagram about how my lashes look week to week and here's a sampling of a general timeline of my lashes. They tend to thin out a bit on my outer edges probably because of sleeping on my sides.
