If you haven’t delved into this masterpiece. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?!?!? If you missed the HBO sneak peek, I highly recommend buying the album and watching the movie right away. And don’t do the “watch it while I do other stuff” routine. Sit and watch.
Take it all in.
Here’s a play-by-play of what my emotional roller coaster was like while watching it the first time through. It won't really make much sense unless you watch it too. But it's pretty funny on its own.
(Note: The song title is bolded, the poem interlude is italicized and in quotes are lines that stuck out to me.)
Pray You Catch Me
That first image tho! I’m ready for you Beyonce!
Woah this feels super vulnerable. Simple. But so powerful.
“Where do you go when you go quiet?”
Tears! Omg. My heart. Is. Breaking.
Don’t cry Bey!
This looks crazy and beautiful at the same time.
“Are you cheating on me?”
Ok I love that dress. This is a groovy beat.
That’s a bat.
Guurrrrrrll. Get. It.
She looks so happy to be breaking shit.
That dress is still amazeballs tho.
The visual of a monster truck with the music box type music is a little trippy.
Kind of creepy.
And by kind of I mean VERY.
“Why can’t you see me? Everyone else can.”
Don’t Hurt Yourself
Ok. Shit is about to get real.
That’s lots of underboob. Consider going a size up.
“I’m too much for you.”
Bey is mad. And a little scary.
Don’t make Bey mad.
“Ashes to ashes, dust to side chicks.”
She’s not sorry.
“Suck on my balls, cuz I’ve had enough.”
She is over your shit.
Her bus says “boy bye” on the front.
Who is becky with the good hair?
I feel awkward.
So much lip pouting. Is Kylie going to show up?
I love the lower register of her voice.
“Your mother is a woman. And women like her cannot be contained.”
An ode to mother.
Love the brass.
Ohhh that beat. Foot is tapping immediately.
Now it’s time for an ode to dad.
That dress is fantastic.
Yay, throwback video.
“My daddy warned me about men like you. He said baby girl he’s playing you.”
Come … .home. I see what you did there.
She looks so sad.
“You’re my life line and you’re trying’ to kill me.”
Are things over?
This feels very baptismal.
“Baptize me, now that reconciliation is possible.”
Yep, I’m with you Bey.
This is my favorite so far.
Simply her voice and a piano.
The first time we see Jay!
This feels so personal.
My god I could cry right now.
Bring us to church.
James Blake! I know that’s your voice!
My heart is breaking again. This is so powerful.
Lemonade recipe ... I get it now!
I want to make this. That’s a lot of sugar, though.
Ode to grandma.
“With every tear came redemption. And my torturer became my remedy.”
Aww Jay and Bey getting their IV tats.
This just feels freeing.
My heart literally feels lighter.
Wedding footage! Baby Blue!
Oh, I already know I LOVE this song.
This is the first time in a long time that I've fully listened to an album straight through. Like the good ol' put a CD in and listen all the way through days. And wow. I was so emotionally invested in this. Overall, this music is so different from the usual Beyoncé. She is evolving and I love it. Sitting and listening to the entire album at once while seeing a visual representation of what the artist wanted to convey? Magical. This is brilliant and I will probably watch it a million times. Beyoncé, TAKE MY MONEY! Also, here's a link to learn more about Warsan Shire, the poet who wrote all of the poems throughout the film.
